Type 2 Diabetes and Chronic Kidney Disease: A New Clinical Research Opportunity in Central Florida
AMBITION 2, a study of the investigational medicine zenagamtide, is enrolling in Ocoee
AMBITION 2 is a clinical research study of zenagamtide, an investigational medicine, in adults who have type 2 diabetes treated with once-daily basal insulin and who are also living with chronic kidney disease. It is being done to see how well zenagamtide lowers blood sugar and body weight compared with a non-active medicine (placebo), and involves about 450 people across 10 countries.
Living with type 2 diabetes can become more challenging when insulin therapy is part of your daily routine and you are also managing chronic kidney disease. Keeping blood sugar within a healthy range while protecting kidney function takes careful, ongoing medical management.
For adults in Central Florida living with both conditions, clinical research may offer a way to contribute to the development of new treatment options.
Our research team in Ocoee is participating in AMBITION 2, a clinical research study evaluating an investigational medicine called zenagamtide in adults with type 2 diabetes who are using insulin. The study is part of Novo Nordisk's AMBITION development programme for zenagamtide.
What is the AMBITION 2 study?
AMBITION 2 is being done to see how well zenagamtide lowers blood sugar levels and body weight compared with a non-active medicine (placebo) in people who have type 2 diabetes together with chronic kidney disease. It involves around 450 people across 10 countries.
Zenagamtide is an investigational medicine. It is not an approved treatment, and it is not available to patients outside a clinical trial.
Why study type 2 diabetes and kidney disease together?
Diabetes and kidney health are closely connected. Over time, elevated blood glucose can contribute to kidney damage, while declining kidney function can make diabetes management more complex.
For people who require insulin and also have chronic kidney disease, researchers continue to study new approaches that may help improve metabolic health while addressing the needs of this higher-risk group.
Studies like AMBITION 2 are part of determining whether an investigational therapy may eventually become a safe and effective treatment option.
Who may be eligible?
You may qualify to take part in this study if:
- You are 18 years or older.
- You have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes for at least 6 months.
- You are treated with once-daily basal insulin.
- You have a chronic kidney disease.
- You have excess body weight (BMI of 25 kg/m² or above).
Important notes on eligibility
- Treatment with any other medicine that has a GLP-1 receptor agonist effect, or with amylin analogues, is not permitted, because the study medicine has similar effects.
- This is not the complete list of requirements. Other medical conditions, medications or previous treatments may affect whether someone can take part.
- Meeting the points above does not guarantee enrolment. Final eligibility is decided by the study team after a medical screening.
What does taking part involve?
On top of the regular care you receive from your usual doctors, in this study you would also:
- Receive study-related health checks and medical tests.
- Be able to have conversations about your health with a team of specialised doctors and nurses.
- Have regular monitoring of your overall health.
- Contribute to medical research with information that may help people with type 2 diabetes.
Before you decide anything, the research team will explain the study in detail — the study medicine and the placebo, the visits and assessments, laboratory testing and other procedures, the potential risks and potential benefits, how long participation lasts, what is expected of you, and any costs or compensation that apply.
You will have the opportunity to ask questions before giving informed consent. Taking part in research is entirely voluntary, and choosing not to take part will not affect the medical care you receive.
Why consider clinical research in Central Florida?
West Orange Endocrinology & Research Center is a physician-led clinical research centre in Ocoee, Florida, serving patients across Greater Orlando and Central Florida. The practice combines endocrinology care with Phase II–IV clinical research, and has supported studies in diabetes, obesity, kidney disease and other metabolic conditions.
Our research team explains clinical trials in plain language and helps people work out whether a study might be appropriate for them.
